If cello and the desire to play it is an important part of your life

Summer Course
14 -19 August 2023

The summer course will once again be held in the beautiful surroundings of Bryanston School.

As well as a daily cello lesson and individual practice routines, we will spend time away from the cello exploring and discussing issues relevant to us all, as well as more focused topics: preparation for college auditions; preparation for orchestral auditions (working on orchestral excerpts); classes to help with learning to teach the cello (which many of us will do at some stage).

We will also focus on the connection between the music, our technique and our well-being, with the aim of walking on stage confidently and with an ability to be “in the moment”. To facilitate this, we offer time to rehearse with our pianist JP Ekins, performance platforms – a safe, supportive environment where students are encouraged to take risks and try things out in front of people – open discussion forums, as well as the opportunity to attend daily yoga classes, to benefit our mind, soul and body.

We are delighted to welcome Martin Johnson, Principal Cellist of the National Symphony Orchestra (RTE Ireland). He will work alongside Sue Lowe - founder of these courses and previously cello teacher at national music colleges, university departments and specialist music schools, Matt Lowe – who, having played with the BBCSO for over a decade before becoming Director of Music at Bradfield College, is now combining his teaching experience, a performing career and recently obtained coaching qualification to influence music education, JP Ekins – pianist and chamber musician who is well known for his skills as a duo partner and is currently working at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama amongst other institutions and John Gibson - yoga instructor and director of a top Belfast Yoga Studio.

It is a feature of these courses that the environment is non-judgmental and that everyone is supportive of each other. So, please do come and join us, advance your own personal and music journey and take time to immerse yourself in your cello, lovely music and a simply unique environment!

Please do get in contact if you have any queries (Matt on 07916 172701) and we look forward to welcoming you in August!

The course meets for a week  in the idyllic surroundings of Bryanston School in Dorset.

The Aim of the
International
Cello Gathering

We welcome students from about mid-teens, including adult players. The minimum standard is approximately ABRSM Grade VI but this is only a guide. The Easter course is a great way for music college and university music department cellists to prepare for upcoming exam recitals.

In this friendly, uncompetitive environment there are no agendas other than to help ensure healthy performance practice while preparing you to be on stage or in the exam room ready to play to the best of your ability. Whatever your goal,  the course is designed to help individuals with their specific needs as well as facilitating outstanding short term progress.

If cello and the desire to play it is an important part of your life then this unique course with its personable, friendly atmosphere and wonderful setting has everything.

I feel like I have grown and improved so much within the week. All the teachers have given me great advice which I can continue to use to help improve my playing. In between the lessons there was plenty of time to practice and to put into place what I had learnt. As well as great teachers, having the time with an accompanist and a performance opportunity was hugely beneficial, especially as I have my final recital coming up.
